Nigerian passport holders now have access to at least 20 destinations outside Africa without the need to obtain a traditional visa before travelling, providing more opportunities for tourism, business, education and family visits.
The destinations allow Nigerian travellers to enter either visa-free, through a visa-on-arrival process, or by obtaining an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) or electronic visa (e-Visa) instead of applying for a conventional visa at an embassy or consulate before departure.
Among the countries offering visa-free access are Barbados, Dominica, Haiti, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Fiji, Vanuatu, Micronesia, the Cook Islands and Niue.
Other destinations, including Palau, Timor-Leste, the Maldives, Laos, Cambodia, Iran, Bolivia and Samoa, permit Nigerians to obtain a visa or entry permit upon arrival, subject to meeting the immigration requirements of the host country.
In addition, Sri Lanka allows Nigerian citizens to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before departure, making the travel process simpler than obtaining a traditional visa.
Travel experts, however, advise prospective travellers to verify the latest immigration requirements before booking flights, as visa policies are subject to change.
They note that many countries still require visitors to present a passport with at least six months’ validity, proof of accommodation, return or onward flight tickets, evidence of sufficient funds and, in some cases, health or travel insurance documents.
Experts also caution that visa-free or visa-on-arrival access does not automatically guarantee entry, as immigration officials at the destination retain the authority to determine whether a traveller meets the country’s entry conditions.
The expanded travel options are expected to boost international mobility for Nigerian citizens, particularly those travelling for business, tourism, education and cultural exchanges.
