…Says Jorge Jesus Broke His Word

Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence on the controversy surrounding his abrupt departure from Portugal’s national team camp, saying coach Jorge Jesus broke his word over an agreement concerning his involvement with the team.

In a lengthy statement released on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, Ronaldo said he decided to give his account “in the first person and directly” after promising Portuguese supporters that he would explain the circumstances behind his departure.

The 41-year-old captain revealed that, following the 2026 World Cup, he had already prepared a letter to the Portuguese people outlining what he intended to say when he eventually ended his international career.

According to Ronaldo, however, Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença asked him during the flight home from the United States to reconsider his decision to retire because the federation wanted him to continue playing for the national team.

Ronaldo said Proença subsequently sought his opinion on the appointment of Jorge Jesus, who was being considered alongside other candidates. He told the federation president that Jesus would, in his view, be the right choice.

The Al-Nassr forward therefore said he was genuinely pleased when Jesus was unveiled as Portugal’s new head coach, adding that he believed the appointment was the right decision.

Ronaldo outlines agreement with Jesus

Ronaldo said Jesus contacted him several days later and requested a face-to-face meeting. The two eventually met at Cidade do Futebol, where Ronaldo’s club was conducting its pre-season preparations.

According to Ronaldo, Jesus told him he was counting on him and regarded his presence as fundamental to the national team project. He said the coach presented him with a plan that would see him play the first and final matches of the camp, while managing his physical workload through substitutions.

Ronaldo said Jesus subsequently suggested that he remain in Portugal rather than travel with the squad to Norway and Denmark, before rejoining the team ahead of the match at the Estádio do Dragão.

The Portugal captain said he rejected the proposal immediately, arguing that staying behind while his teammates travelled would not set the right example for a player wearing the captain’s armband.

He said Jesus eventually accepted his position.

Ronaldo added that another meeting took place at his home in Lisbon on the eve of the training camp, at the coach’s request, and that the principles agreed upon during their earlier discussions remained unchanged.

Dispute escalates during Norway match

Ronaldo played against Wales at Alvalade and was substituted without protest. He said he personally handed the captain’s armband to Bruno Fernandes and remained focused on the team’s victory.

The situation changed on the day of Portugal’s match in Norway.

Ronaldo said an assistant coach approached him during lunch and informed him that Jesus wanted to speak with him. According to the forward, the coach then asked whether he was fit enough to play for 30 minutes.

Although the request differed from the physical recovery plan previously agreed with him, Ronaldo said he accepted and was told to prepare to play.

He warmed up from half-time but was ultimately not introduced into the game.

It was at that point, according to Ronaldo, that he felt the agreement between himself and Jesus had been broken.

“The coach had broken his word to me,” Ronaldo said in the statement.

Jesus has previously offered a different account of the situation, saying Ronaldo had been told he could play for up to 30 minutes if the team required him, but that the decision ultimately rested with the coach.

Ronaldo accepts responsibility for walkout

Ronaldo also acknowledged that his reaction to the situation was not without fault.

He apologised for failing to greet supporters after the match and for leaving the national team camp, saying he understood that his actions could attract disciplinary consequences.

The veteran forward also apologised to his teammates and said he accepted that the rules should apply equally to everyone.

Despite the disagreement, Ronaldo insisted that he had never sought to interfere with the technical decisions of Portugal’s coaches throughout his international career.

He maintained that he had always respected the decisions of national team managers, whether or not he personally agreed with them.

Ronaldo’s departure from the camp on September 30 had followed a press conference in which Jesus confirmed that the forward would not start against Denmark. The incident came after Ronaldo had remained an unused substitute in Portugal’s earlier 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway.

The controversy has since raised questions about Ronaldo’s future with Portugal. However, Jesus and FPF president Pedro Proença have both publicly indicated that the door remains open for the veteran forward to return. Proença described the episode as a misunderstanding that should be resolved internally.

Ronaldo’s latest statement now offers his most detailed explanation yet of the events leading to his departure, placing the breakdown of trust between himself and Jesus at the centre of the dispute.

For now, the two sides have given different accounts of the crucial conversation over Ronaldo’s expected playing time, leaving the circumstances surrounding the incident open to competing interpretations.
