...Says Players ready to Showcase Their Identity
Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has expressed confidence ahead of Nigeria’s international friendly against Portugal, insisting that the three-time African champions should not be viewed as underdogs despite facing one of Europe’s football powerhouses.
Speaking during his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, June 9, Chelle said the encounter would be a valuable test for his team, stressing that Nigeria possesses its own strengths and football philosophy.
“We are not a small opponent,” the Franco-Malian tactician said. “We come into the game with our strengths and weaknesses. This is not a question of who is the best team; I’m only thinking about our style and our philosophy. It will be a great game.”
The highly anticipated friendly, scheduled for Wednesday, June 10, in Lisbon, forms part of Portugal’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The European side will face DR Congo during the tournament, prompting suggestions that Nigeria was selected because of similarities between the two African nations.
However, Chelle dismissed that notion, arguing that every team has a distinct identity. According to him, while Portugal may be seeking exposure to the intensity and physicality often associated with African football, the Super Eagles cannot be compared directly with the Congolese side.
The former Mali coach believes the match presents an important opportunity for Nigeria to gauge its progress against one of the strongest teams in world football. He noted that facing elite opposition is crucial to the team’s development as it continues to build momentum under his leadership.
Chelle also reserved special praise for Portugal, describing Roberto Martínez’s men as one of the most complete teams in international football. He highlighted the quality spread across their squad, from defence to attack, and pointed to the experience of captain Cristiano Ronaldo as one of the factors that makes them genuine contenders on the global stage.
Despite Nigeria’s heavy 4-0 defeat to Portugal when the two nations last met in November 2022, Chelle insisted that past results would have no bearing on Wednesday’s contest. Instead, he said his focus remains firmly on improving the team’s performances and ensuring the players continue to embrace his tactical approach.
For the Super Eagles coach, the result is only one part of the bigger picture. More importantly, he wants his players to demonstrate growth, discipline and belief in the team’s philosophy as Nigeria continues preparations for future continental and global challenges.
The clash is expected to draw significant attention from football fans across the world, with both nations looking to sharpen their squads ahead of major competitions. For Chelle and his players, it represents another opportunity to prove that the Super Eagles can compete with the very best while staying true to their football identity.
