…Locally made gun, ammunition and other weapons reportedly recovered
The Osun State Amotekun Corps has arrested two men suspected of cult-related and other criminal activities during a midnight patrol in Ilesa, Osun State.
The suspects, identified as 19-year-old Miracle Ifunaya from Imo State and 30-year-old Taiwo Ogunsola from Kwara State, were arrested at about 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.
According to the security outfit, operatives attached to the Ilesa Area Command were conducting a routine patrol when they noticed unusual movement around a mechanic workshop along Adeti Road.
The patrol team reportedly moved towards the workshop to find out what was happening. The Corps said two men were found hiding inside a tricycle at the premises and attempted to escape after sighting the operatives.
Their attempt was unsuccessful as the suspects were intercepted and arrested, the Corps said.
A search allegedly carried out after the arrest resulted in the recovery of a locally made pistol or shotgun, ammunition and other weapons, according to Amotekun.
The Corps further said preliminary investigation suggested that the suspects were involved in illegal gold mining activities in Ilesa.
During questioning, Ogunsola allegedly confessed to being a member of the Aiye Confraternity, while Ifunaya was said to have admitted working with him.
However, the Corps said investigations are still ongoing to establish the full extent of the suspects’ alleged activities and determine whether they have any connection with other criminal incidents in Osun State.
Confirming the arrest in Osogbo, the Commander of the Osun Amotekun Corps, High Chief Dr. Hon. Adekunle Isaac Omoyele, said the operation was carried out by the Ilesa Area Command during a routine security patrol.
Omoyele said the operatives became suspicious after observing what appeared to be unusual movement around the workshop in the early hours of Wednesday.
He explained that the suspects tried to flee when they realised that the patrol team was approaching, but the operatives quickly apprehended them.
“Our operatives were on routine patrol at about 2:00 a.m. when they noticed some strange movement around a mechanic workshop along Adeti Road in Ilesa. They moved closer to check what was happening, and the suspects attempted to escape. They were arrested, and during the search, a locally made gun, ammunition and other weapons were recovered from them,” the commander said.
Omoyele added that initial questioning indicated alleged involvement in illegal mining and cult-related activities, while stressing that other aspects of the case were still being investigated.
The commander said the suspects had been transferred to the Osun State Police Command Headquarters in Osogbo for further investigation and possible prosecution in accordance with the law.
He commended the operatives for their vigilance and urged residents to remain alert and cooperate with security agencies by providing timely information about suspicious activities in their communities.
Omoyele particularly advised residents to pay attention to unusual movements and unfamiliar persons, noting that credible information from members of the public could help security agencies prevent criminal activities.
The commander reaffirmed the commitment of the Osun Amotekun Corps to working with the police and other security agencies to protect lives and property across the state.
He also urged residents who notice suspicious persons or activities to report them promptly to Amotekun or the nearest security agency.
The Osun Amotekun Corps said it would continue to rely on community cooperation and credible intelligence in its efforts to prevent crime and maintain security across the state.
