The Nigerian military has confirmed the death of one of its officers during the operation that secured the release of abducted pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, describing his sacrifice as a testament to the courage of troops combating insecurity across the country.
The fallen officer, Lieutenant F.A. Isaac, was killed while participating in the intelligence-led rescue mission that led to the safe recovery of 44 pupils and teachers who had been held captive for several weeks after their abduction.
According to military authorities, the operation was carried out by a combined team of security personnel following sustained intelligence gathering and coordinated tactical engagements within the Old Oyo National Park, where the kidnappers were believed to have established their hideout.
The military disclosed that Lieutenant Isaac sustained fatal injuries during the mission and later died in the line of duty. He was subsequently buried with full military honours in recognition of his bravery and commitment to national service.
While mourning the late officer, military authorities reiterated their resolve to sustain ongoing operations against criminal groups responsible for kidnapping and other violent crimes across the country.
The successful operation resulted in the rescue of all the abducted pupils and teachers, who have since been reunited with their families after undergoing medical examinations and receiving necessary care.
Reacting to the development, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu praised the military and other security agencies for the successful rescue operation. He described the outcome as a significant achievement in the country’s fight against criminality and extended his condolences to the family of the deceased officer.
Similarly, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde commended the security agencies for their professionalism and determination, noting that the safe return of the victims had brought immense relief to their families and the affected communities.
Governor Makinde also paid tribute to Lieutenant Isaac, acknowledging the ultimate sacrifice he made in the service of the nation while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to supporting efforts aimed at strengthening security across Oyo State.
The rescue operation has been widely celebrated as a major breakthrough in the campaign against kidnapping in the South-West. However, the loss of the young Army officer has also highlighted the enormous risks faced daily by security personnel protecting lives and safeguarding communities.
Military authorities said investigations into the abduction remain ongoing, while security operations have been intensified to dismantle criminal networks operating in forests and other remote locations across the region.
