…Hashim says political differences should not hinder national rebuilding
The presidential candidate of the Accord Party, Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, says he and Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, the presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), have agreed on the need for a Government of National Unity after the 2027 presidential election.
Hashim made this known on Thursday, September 24, 2026, following a meeting with Makinde in Ibadan, Oyo State. He said their discussion centred on the need for a peaceful political transition and a broad-based administration capable of addressing Nigeria’s challenges.
According to Hashim, the proposed arrangement would go beyond political competition and focus on building a stable and united country after the election.
He said the objective should not simply be a change of government but the creation of a political environment where Nigerians from different backgrounds can contribute to rebuilding the country.
“We are working hard to defeat the government of misery and hardship that the government has become,” Hashim said in a post on his verified Facebook page.
He added that he and Makinde had agreed on the importance of national unity, saying any political transition should be followed by efforts to establish a stable and inclusive government.
“We both agreed on unity, not just to achieve peaceful change, but a stable and united Nigeria through the formation of a post-election Government of National Unity,” he said.
Hashim said a post-APC administration, as he described it, would require the involvement of competent Nigerians drawn from different political parties and backgrounds.
“A post-APC-led Nigeria requires the participation of the best of the most patriotic hands to bring our nation together after twelve years of the most virulent division in our history,” he said.
The Accord candidate argued that Nigeria’s challenges require a national response and that governance after the election should not be approached solely from a winner-takes-all perspective.
For him, political differences should not prevent leaders from working together where cooperation is considered necessary to strengthen national stability and address pressing economic and security concerns.
Hashim described his meeting with Makinde as part of wider political consultations ahead of the 2027 election.
He disclosed that he had also held discussions with other presidential candidates on the possibility of forming a post-Tinubu Government of National Unity, saying the idea was gaining traction among some political actors.
“The journey starts NOW, with clear understanding amongst leaders!” Hashim stated.
He said the proposed Government of National Unity would focus on restoring national cohesion, rebuilding public confidence, strengthening institutions and bringing together competent Nigerians to tackle the country’s economic and security challenges.
Hashim also stressed the importance of putting national interest ahead of partisan considerations once the election is concluded.
“Nigeria belongs to all of us. After the election, we must put Nigeria first,” he added.
The meeting comes amid broader political consultations ahead of the 2027 presidential election, as political parties and candidates explore possible alliances, cooperation and strategies for the coming electoral contest. Recent reports have described the Hashim-Makinde discussion as part of those emerging political realignments.
For now, the proposed Government of National Unity remains a political proposal discussed by the two leaders, with its eventual composition, structure and implementation dependent on developments before and after the 2027 election.
