…Association reaffirms commitment to credible information and responsible digital journalism

As Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary on Thursday, October 1, 2026, the Osun Online Publishers Association (OOPA) has called for greater investment in young Nigerians, responsible digital journalism and a renewed commitment to national unity.

In its Independence Day message, the association extended warm greetings to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, governors, political and traditional leaders, professionals, young Nigerians and citizens across the country.

OOPA described the anniversary as an opportunity not only to celebrate Nigeria’s journey since independence but also to reflect on the country Nigerians want to build and the responsibility of citizens in shaping that future.

The association said a nation can only make meaningful progress when it invests in its young people, listens to their aspirations and creates opportunities for them to contribute to national development.

It also acknowledged the contributions of past and present leaders who have served the country, noting that their efforts have helped sustain Nigeria’s relevance within Africa and the wider international community.

According to OOPA, the next phase of national development requires deliberate efforts to empower a new generation of Nigerians who are creating businesses, developing solutions, advancing knowledge and contributing to society in different fields.

OOPA highlights role of digital media

The association also used the occasion to reaffirm the responsibility of the media, particularly online publishers, in shaping public discourse.

OOPA said the Fourth Estate remains central to informing citizens and facilitating conversations on issues that affect society.

It therefore reiterated its commitment to responsible journalism, credible reporting and the fight against fake news, misinformation and disinformation.

The association said it would continue to use its platforms to promote accurate information while highlighting the positive stories, opportunities and possibilities emerging from different parts of Nigeria.

OOPA has previously described itself as a professional association committed to ethical journalism, press freedom, capacity development and responsible online reporting in Osun State and beyond.

Calls for opportunities for young Nigerians

Reflecting on Nigeria’s 66-year journey, OOPA acknowledged the challenges that have accompanied successive administrations and transitions in leadership.

At the same time, the association recognised the developmental efforts that have contributed to Nigeria’s continued relevance as one of Africa’s major nations.

OOPA said the country’s future should be built around opportunities that allow citizens, particularly young people, to thrive at home.

It expressed hope for a Nigeria where infrastructure and road networks receive sustained attention, skilled Nigerians can find meaningful employment and young people can pursue their ambitions without being compelled to leave the country in search of opportunities.

The association also called for greater recognition of Nigerians who have contributed to national development and expressed hope that citizens living abroad would increasingly have reasons to return and contribute to the growth of their homeland.

Envisions a Nigeria of dignity and accountability

OOPA further expressed its desire for a country where the Nigerian passport and national identity command dignity and respect, while every citizen has a voice and a sense of belonging.

It called for the country’s commonwealth to be managed with fairness and accountability, stressing that Nigerians from different backgrounds should be able to face each new day with renewed confidence in their country.

“Our message is simple but profound: Everyone who loves Nigeria should begin to speak about her prosperity, believe in her possibilities and contribute to building the nation we desire,” the association said.

According to OOPA, building the Nigeria of citizens’ dreams cannot be left to government alone.

The association said leaders, professionals, entrepreneurs, young people, media practitioners and ordinary citizens all have responsibilities to contribute to national development.

“Nigeria’s story must include its possibilities”

OOPA said the country’s story should not be defined only by its challenges, but should also reflect the resilience, creativity and potential of its people.

The association maintained that young Nigerians who are building businesses, developing technology, acquiring skills and creating solutions represent an important part of the country’s future.

It consequently reaffirmed its commitment to responsible digital journalism, credible information and constructive public discourse.

As Nigerians celebrate another year of independence, OOPA called for stronger unity and a shared commitment to building a country where citizens can live, work and pursue their aspirations with greater confidence.

The association concluded with prayers for the wellbeing and progress of Osun State, the South-West region and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
