Three people have been killed following a suspected cult clash in the Imo area of Ilesa, Osun State, prompting the police to deploy tactical operatives to prevent further violence.
The incident occurred at about 8:00 p.m. on Monday, August 10, 2026, when suspected members of the Aiye and Eiye confraternities reportedly clashed in the area.
The Osun State Police Command confirmed the incident, saying three people were killed in the confrontation. The victims were identified simply as Idowu, Yinka and Eja, according to the report.
Following the clash, the Commissioner of Police in charge of the 2026 Osun State Governorship Election, CP Samuel Erale Etaifo, psc, mnips, directed the immediate deployment of operatives from the Violence Crime Response Unit (VCRU) to the area.
The tactical deployment, according to the police, is aimed at preventing further escalation, restoring calm and tracking down those responsible for the violence.
Investigators have also recovered four expended cartridges and two Android mobile phones from the scene, while preliminary investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident have commenced.
The police have subsequently directed tactical teams to intensify patrols, surveillance and intelligence-led operations across Ilesa and adjoining communities, particularly around areas identified as possible flashpoints.
The move is intended to forestall any reprisal attack and prevent the clash from spreading to other parts of the town.
The latest incident has heightened concerns over security in Osun State, coming just days before the August 15, 2026 governorship election.
The police command is expected to maintain increased security presence in Ilesa and other areas considered vulnerable to violence as election preparations reach their final stage.
Residents have been urged to remain calm and avoid actions that could further inflame tensions in the community. Members of the public are also encouraged to provide security agencies with credible information that could assist ongoing investigations.
The police have warned individuals or groups who may attempt to exploit the incident to cause further unrest that they will face the law.
As investigations continue, security authorities are expected to sustain patrols and intelligence operations across Ilesa to prevent further bloodshed and maintain public safety ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
