The Osun State All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Campaign Council has expressed concern over what it described as the growing wave of political violence in the state ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election.
The concerns were raised when officials of the British High Commission paid a courtesy visit to the campaign council as part of the Commission’s ongoing engagement with political stakeholders ahead of the governorship poll.
During the meeting, the APC campaign team said the security situation and rising political tension in parts of Osun State deserved urgent attention, warning that unchecked violence could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
The council urged both local and international stakeholders to closely monitor developments before, during and after the election to ensure that democratic principles are upheld.
According to the campaign council, every political party and candidate should be allowed to canvass for votes freely without intimidation, harassment or violence. It stressed that credible elections can only be achieved in an atmosphere where political actors and voters are able to participate without fear.
The APC delegation also appealed to security agencies to remain professional, impartial and proactive in maintaining law and order throughout the election period. It maintained that voters must be guaranteed the freedom to exercise their constitutional rights without interference.
The British High Commission delegation, in its remarks, reaffirmed the importance of peaceful political participation, respect for democratic institutions and strict adherence to the rule of law. The delegation encouraged all political actors to resolve disagreements through lawful channels and place the collective interest of the people above partisan considerations.
The engagement formed part of the British High Commission’s broader consultations with political parties and other stakeholders as preparations intensify for the forthcoming governorship election in Osun State.
The meeting comes at a time when political activities across the state have become increasingly intense, with the major political parties trading accusations over alleged acts of violence, intimidation and breaches of the peace.
Despite the growing political tension, the APC Campaign Council reiterated its commitment to a peaceful, transparent and credible electoral process. It also urged its members and supporters to remain law-abiding and conduct themselves peacefully throughout the campaign and election period.
Political observers believe continued dialogue among political parties, election managers, security agencies, civil society organisations and international partners will be crucial in ensuring that the August 15 governorship election is conducted in a peaceful atmosphere and reflects the genuine will of the electorate.
