The Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Osun State, Hon. Idowu Abiodun, has reaffirmed the importance of grassroots governance in strengthening security, as local councils distributed motorcycles to security agencies across the state.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Abiodun described the initiative as a practical step toward improving security operations, especially in rural and hard-to-reach areas. He noted that the effort goes beyond simply providing equipment, reflecting a deeper commitment to protecting lives and property.

He emphasized that security is fundamental to development, stressing that no society can progress without peace and stability. According to him, local governments are uniquely positioned to respond quickly and effectively to community-specific challenges because of their proximity to the people.

Abiodun linked the success of the initiative to the growing autonomy of local governments in Nigeria. He explained that increased financial and administrative independence has made it easier for councils to act decisively and deliver meaningful interventions.

“When local governments are given the freedom to manage their resources and set priorities, the results are immediate and far-reaching. This initiative shows what can be achieved through that level of empowerment,” he said.

He added that the distribution of motorcycles is only the beginning, revealing plans to roll out more security equipment and vehicles in the coming weeks as part of a broader effort to strengthen the state’s security framework.

The ALGON chairman also commended security personnel for their dedication, urging them to make effective use of the motorcycles to improve response times and enhance patrol activities.

Highlighting the role of the public, he called on residents to support security agencies by providing timely and reliable information, noting that maintaining security is a shared responsibility.

Abiodun further expressed appreciation to stakeholders who contributed to the success of the initiative and acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting local government autonomy, which he said is already making a positive impact at the grassroots level.

In his remarks, the Osun State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, praised the council chairmen for bringing governance closer to the people through tangible support for security agencies.
He described the donation as both timely and impactful, noting that the motorcycles would improve mobility, speed up response times, and strengthen patrol operations, particularly in rural communities.

“This support will go a long way in enhancing our efforts to combat crime and ensure the safety of our communities,” he said.
Gotan assured that the motorcycles would be put to effective use and reiterated the importance of continued cooperation between security agencies and the public.

Overall, the initiative highlights the growing role of empowered local governments in tackling security challenges and delivering results that directly affect people’s daily lives.
