The Alaafin of Oyo’s Palace has formally debunked claims attributed to Oyo State Governor, His Excellency Seyi Makinde, regarding alleged consultations with leading traditional rulers in the state over the rotational chairmanship of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs.
In a statement issued by the Palace, it was categorically clarified that at no time did His Imperial Majesty, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Engineer Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, hold any meeting with the Governor on the matter. The Palace further emphasized that the Alaafin did not engage in any joint discussion with the Olubadan of Ibadanland or the Soun of Ogbomoso as suggested.
The statement stressed that the Alaafin neither conveyed nor endorsed any position supporting a rotational chairmanship arrangement among the three foremost traditional rulers in the state. According to the Palace, any suggestion to the contrary is inaccurate and does not reflect the Alaafin’s stance.
It was reiterated that the official position of the Alaafin and the broader Oyo community on the structure and leadership of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs has already been clearly articulated. This position, the Palace noted, was formally communicated to the Governor through a memorandum submitted by the Oyo Council of Elders.
The statement was signed by Mr. Bode Durojaiye, Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin, who reaffirmed the Alaafin’s status as the Paramount Ruler of Oyo Kingdom and the Superior Head of Yorubaland, underscoring the Palace’s commitment to clarity, institutional respect, and historical integrity.
