The Federal Government has disclosed plans for a six-week partial closure of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway to facilitate essential maintenance works on key bridges along the route, underscoring concerns over public safety and infrastructure integrity.

The announcement, made by the Federal Ministry of Works, explained that the intervention will address critical defects, particularly worn expansion joints on selected bridges, which require urgent rehabilitation to avert potential hazards to road users.

Affected sections of the expressway include bridge points around the Kara, Magboro, and Arepo–Punch corridors. During the repair period, traffic will be managed through controlled diversions and phased lane closures designed to sustain vehicular movement while construction progresses.

Officials noted that technical evaluations confirmed the urgency of the repairs, warning that postponement could result in more extensive damage and longer-term disruptions. The ministry stressed that the partial closure is a preventive measure aimed at safeguarding lives and preserving the durability of the roadway.

The Federal Controller of Works stated that contractors have been directed to work within a strict six-week timeline, with round-the-clock operations planned to ensure timely delivery and limit inconvenience to commuters.

Road users have been urged to plan ahead, explore alternative routes, and comply with traffic guidance from law enforcement and traffic management agencies stationed along the affected sections.

The Lagos–Ibadan Expressway serves as a major economic and logistical link between Lagos, Ogun State, and other regions. The Federal Government appealed for public understanding, assuring that the temporary disruption will result in improved safety and smoother traffic flow upon completion of the repair works.
