BREAKING: Gumi Calls for Kanu’s Freedom — Says Amnesty Possible If IPOB Leader Shows Remorse

An Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has sparked a fresh national debate after suggesting that he would personally lead the campaign for a pardon and amnesty for detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu but only if Kanu demonstrates genuine remorse and commits to peaceful dialogue.

Gumi, known for his outspoken advocacy for dialogue with aggrieved groups, reportedly stated that Nigeria’s unity can only be sustained when “all sides choose peace over confrontation.” According to him, the path to resolving longstanding tensions in the South-East lies in “humility, repentance, and a collective desire to heal.”

The cleric, who has in the past engaged with bandit groups in northern Nigeria, argued that no conflict is above negotiation. He noted that if separatist agitation is addressed with sincerity, the government could consider reconciliation measures similar to past amnesty initiatives offered to militant groups.

He stressed that Kanu remains an influential figure whose stance has shaped the emotions of millions, and any effort to reintegrate him must begin with a commitment to peaceful coexistence. “Nigeria cannot move forward when segments of the country feel unheard,” Gumi reportedly said.

The comments have triggered strong reactions across political and civic circles. While some see Gumi’s position as a bold push for national unity, others accuse him of double standards, pointing out that he has publicly advocated clemency for armed groups despite their violent track record.

Human rights voices argue that Gumi’s intervention highlights the wider concerns about selective justice, especially following the recent life-imprisonment sentence handed down to Kanu on terrorism-related charges. Critics insist that national healing must be evenly applied, not influenced by personalities or regional power blocs.

Supporters of reconciliation, however, welcome Gumi’s position, saying Nigeria must explore every possible route to calm ethnic tensions and end years of mistrust. They insist that amnesty, if pursued, must come with accountability, dialogue, and clear commitments to peace.

As reactions continue to mount, the federal government has yet to issue an official response. For now, Gumi’s remarks have reignited discussions on the future of Kanu, the agitation in the South-East, and whether Nigeria is willing or ready to embrace a truth and reconciliation approach.
