Warns Demolitions Could Spark Wider Lagos Crisis

The Foundation for Peace Professionals (PeacePro) has issued a strong caution regarding the ongoing demolition of homes in the Makoko waterfront community, warning that the action, if allowed to continue without adequate safeguards, could precipitate a significant humanitarian and social emergency in Lagos State.

In a statement endorsed by its Executive Director, Abdulrazaq Hamzat, the peacebuilding and human rights organisation recognised the constitutional authority of the Lagos State Government to enforce urban planning regulations and safeguard public welfare. However, it stressed that regulatory enforcement devoid of humane considerations erodes justice, weakens public confidence, and heightens social vulnerability.

PeacePro underscored that Makoko is a long-established settlement, home to generations of residents whose presence reflects decades of institutional neglect and socio-economic marginalisation rather than wilful non-compliance with the law. The organisation noted that the community’s evolution is symptomatic of broader planning failures and exclusionary urban policies.

Hamzat expressed concern that the demolitions have reportedly proceeded without meaningful consultation, compensation frameworks, or resettlement provisions, resulting in widespread displacement and acute hardship. He emphasised that women and children have been disproportionately affected, facing heightened exposure to insecurity and deprivation.

“Urban renewal must not be executed through shock enforcement,” Hamzat stated. “When policy action renders families homeless overnight, it stops being development and becomes displacement.”
PeacePro called for an immediate suspension of further demolitions and urged the state government to initiate transparent, inclusive dialogue with affected residents. It also demanded the publication of a clear, time-bound resettlement and transition strategy that balances environmental and safety considerations with the protection of human dignity.

The organisation warned that sustainable urban safety cannot be achieved by deepening the insecurity of vulnerable populations, noting that inclusive planning, patience, and political resolve are critical to credible urban transformation.

PeacePro reaffirmed its commitment to peacebuilding and constructive engagement, concluding that effective governance is measured not by the application of force, but by fairness, equity, and respect for human rights.
