The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has raised the alarm over a reported violent incident in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area, urging security agencies to urgently investigate the development and take steps to prevent a further breakdown of law and order.
The party made the call on Monday, August 24, 2026, through the Osun APC Media Cluster at an emergency press briefing, where it expressed concern over what it described as a growing pattern of political violence allegedly involving armed thugs in the area.
According to the APC Media Cluster, the latest incident occurred around Naira and Kobo Junction in Ikire, where armed individuals allegedly attempted to take control of a local transport hub.
The group claimed that the confrontation led to the loss of lives, attacks on security personnel and the disruption of economic activities in the community.
Describing the situation as a serious threat to public safety and democratic stability, the APC called on security agencies to act swiftly to restore calm and prevent the violence from spreading.
The party further alleged that police officers who responded to a distress call were attacked during the incident. It also claimed that some weapons were reportedly taken from the officers in the course of the confrontation.
The APC Media Cluster demanded a thorough investigation into the incident and urged the authorities to prosecute anyone found responsible, regardless of political affiliation or connections.
The group also linked the latest development to what it described as a disturbing pattern of political violence in Irewole Local Government Area, recalling the previous killing of the council chairman, Hon. Remi Abass.
It expressed concern over what it described as the lack of conclusion of investigations into previous incidents, warning that failure to bring alleged perpetrators to justice could further undermine public confidence and encourage future acts of violence.
The APC consequently appealed to the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to strengthen security in Ikire and other vulnerable parts of the local government.
It urged the authorities to protect residents, safeguard public institutions and ensure that anyone found responsible for acts of violence is brought before the appropriate authorities.
The party also appealed to residents and its supporters to remain calm and resist any temptation to take the law into their own hands.
According to the APC Media Cluster, political disagreements should be settled through democratic and constitutional processes rather than violence.
While commiserating with families affected by the reported incident, the group reaffirmed its commitment to peace and stability across Osun State.
It further called on political leaders, community stakeholders, traditional institutions and security agencies to work together to prevent further deterioration of security in the state.
“Osun belongs to everyone. No political disagreement should be allowed to turn into violence or place innocent citizens at risk,” the group stated.
The APC’s claims, including its description of the incident as “state-backed” violence, remain allegations from the party and have not been independently established in the statement provided. The circumstances surrounding the reported violence and the alleged attack on security personnel will require confirmation from the relevant security authorities.
