Operatives of the Osun State Security Network Agency, Amotekun Corps, have disrupted a midnight armed robbery attempt along the Ilesa–Ibadan Expressway, rescuing numerous travellers and apprehending one suspect, while other members of the gang escaped into nearby bushes.
The operation took place in the early hours of Wednesday at approximately 12:20 a.m. during a routine patrol by officers attached to the Ilesa Area Command. The patrol was alerted by a motorist, Mr. Maxwell Phillips from Benue State, who had just been attacked by suspected armed robbers along the corridor.
Acting promptly on the tip-off, Amotekun operatives mobilised to the scene and successfully interrupted the robbery. On sighting the patrol vehicle, the suspects reportedly fled. One of them, identified as Chinedu Eze, a 32-year-old male from Ebonyi State, was arrested while attempting to escape.
Recovered from the suspect were a cutlass, a torchlight, and a locally fabricated wooden firearm designed to resemble an AK-47 rifle, allegedly used to threaten and intimidate motorists on the expressway.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect confessed to his involvement and disclosed that his accomplices escaped upon noticing the presence of Amotekun operatives. Efforts are ongoing to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
Confirming the development, the Corps Commander of the Osun Amotekun Corps, High Chief Dr. Adekunle Isaac Omoyele, commended the operatives for their professionalism, alertness, and swift response. He reaffirmed the Corps’ unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Osun State and called on residents to continue supporting Amotekun by providing timely and credible intelligence on suspicious activities.
“Amotekun does not operate in rivalry with other security agencies; rather, we complement their efforts. The effectiveness of our operations largely depends on actionable intelligence from the public. We urge residents to remain vigilant and collaborate with Amotekun and other security agencies to keep Osun State safe,” the Commander stated.
